Refer to Components of a Portfolio for a schematic of the elements and structure of a successful portfolio.
1) Portfolios are sent to departments. A physically separate portfolio must therefore be prepared for each department from which credit is requested. Additionally, you need to give the Regents Office a Master portfolio which contains all of the materials in the individual portfolios but without duplicate materials--e.g., we only need one copy of your resume. The Master portfolio must be kept at the Regents Office for five years according to present State regulations. Individual portfolios are returned to you after they are returned to the Regents Office. You should pick them up.
2) The Master portfolio should contain a summary list of all credits requested from all departments at WVU (and any departments at other institutions). This list should be put at the front of the Master portfolio. [Note: The College of Business and Economics requires a separate sub-master list of all B&E course requests listed by department; see Departmental Guidelines] Please put your name and semester of submission (e.g. Fall 1999) on the cover of the Master portfolio and, if possible, on the spine of the portfolio notebook.
3) Especially those portfolios covering multiple courses within a department need a Table of Contents to assist the reviewer in finding materials. Students often divide such portfolios into relevant sections with tabs--page numbers are not needed. Sections might include: credit request page(s), resume, individual course narratives, and documentation. Documentation may be done separately for each course, or put together at the end. Sometimes tabs are used to identify different documents. When in doubt, ask yourself what will help the reader locate relevant materials. Don't just refer to a large documentation section if "document A" (with an "A" tab) would be more helpful. Evaluators want to know right away what courses are being requested, so put the "credit request" page(s) at or near the beginning of the portfolio.
